History of the Republican Elephant

The symbol of the elephant was created through the eyes of cartoonist, Thomas Nast, back in 1874. Although the elephant had been associated with Republicans in the past, Nast provided the party with its symbol through his political cartoons. Elephants were then adopted by the Republican Party as a sign of strength and vitality.
